The 10 Fastest Cars Ever Made (so far)

Ever since Lamborghini birthed the first modern supercar, the Miura, car manufacturers has been at constant battle-stations with their competitors to produce the fastest car in the world. The ‘80’s saw the 911 take the crown, while the ‘90’s were McLaren’s, but what are the fastest cars in the world right now?

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Taking a standard Bugatti Veyron and thinking “hmm, that’s just not quick enough”, is quite an odd and difficult notion to comprehend. But that’s exactly what the Bugatti bosses did, and a few years later, we were given the Super Sport.

Basically the SS is a Veyron that’s been on the Atkins and steroids. The SS weighs less than the standard car and has around 200bhp more than the stock 987bhp Veyron. All of the weight-management has turned the Veyron into a 267mph, 0-62mph in 2.4 seconds monster that can’t be touched. This is the fastest car in the world.

Hennessey Venom GT

With a top end of 260mph, Hennessey’s Venom GT is hardly a slouch. And when you realise that Hennessey is a remarkably small company compared to Bugatti, it just puts their achievements into perspective. What Hennessey did with the Venom was genius; they bought some Lotus Exige bodies from the English manufacturer and then placed the engine from a jet-fighter in the middle.

The result is, well, startling. The Venom weighs about the same as a toaster and yet still produces 1200hp. And if you believe Hennessey, the Venom GT is capable of speeds in excess of 275mph – so let’s just wait and see what the boys can do.

Koeniggsegg Agera R

Koeniggsegg has always made cars that live as close to the superlative borderline as possible, but with the Agera R, they basically created a new definition for supercar. The car hasn’t received anywhere near as much press at its predecessor, the CCX, but that doesn’t mean it’s slow. In fact, the Agera R is a damn sight quicker than the CCX, and its better looking, too!

With a top speed of 260mph and a 0-62mph time of just 2.9 seconds, it may not be as quick as the above, but it’s still one of the most powerful cars ever made.

SSC Ultimate Aero and Tuatura

Shelby Super Cars may be a very small company, but what they deliver is world class. Their first effort, the Ultimate Aero, blew Bugatti’s standard Veyron into the middle of next century and stole their Guinness world record for top speed. The Ultimate Aero could hit 257mph, thanks to a very low kerb-weight and over 1100bhp.

The company will be releasing their new car, the Tuatura, very soon, and everyone is excited. SSC has talked the talk with this new car, but will they be able to walk the walk?

McLaren F1

McLaren don’t make cars that often; in fact, they’ve only made two official cars in the last two decades. So when they do produce a car, people take note. When their first motor left the factory, it changed the automotive world forever. McLaren produced the F1; a 242mph supercar that was in a completely different league to any other supercar ever produced.

Even Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini couldn’t compete with the F1’s incredible power and top speed, and because of this, the car remains one of the fastest cars ever made.

Saleen Twin-Turbo S7

You’ve probably never heard of Saleen, and that’s because Top Gear or Fifth Gear have never done a proper TV road test of one. Despite the snub, the company is worth some attention and it’s all thanks to the Twin-Turbo S7. It may not be the most subtle supercar ever made, but with a twin-turbo V8 with 750hp, we can forgive it for the visual let-down.

0-62mph comes up in 2.8 seconds and the S7 will go on to a dizzying 248mph, and all for just $555,000.

Noble M600

Noble may not be owned by Lee Noble anymore, but they’re still an operating company with quite a reputation. The old Nobles were just the best handling sports-cars in the world. Lee Noble managed to create a buzz with his Noble brand that had people lining up down the block to sign for his new car. Now, though, the man who created the company is gone, and we’ve been left with the M600.

It’s not all bad, though, as the M600 is probably not a bad way to pick up where Lee left off. With a Volvo V8 pumping out 650bhp, the M600 will eat most supercars for breakfast. With a top speed of 223mph and a price-tag of around £250,000, the M600 is everything a supercar should be.

Pagani Zonda R

Is this Zonda R worthy on our list? After all, it’s not really a racing car, and it’s definitely not a road car, so how can it go on a list that is full of cars with genuine road-going credentials. Well, it’s bloody quick, that’s why!

The Zonda R is the ultimate expression of what a Zonda can be. Without sounding pedantic, the Zonda was never a perfect supercar, but with the R, we may have found ‘THE ONE’. It’s that good.

Ferrari Enzo

It may be getting a bit old, but the Ferrari Enzo is still one of the fastest cars in the world. Ferrari created the Enzo in hope it would become the best Ferrari ever made – and it was. Journalists, drivers and even Jesus all commentated just how good the Enzo was.

And with a top speed of 217mph and V12 performance that is comparable to that of a Eurofighter, it still remains one of the best.

Ascari A10

215mph, 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds and the soundtrack from Victorian England, the Ascari A10 is everything a raw, unplugged supercar should be. It’s brutal, fierce and hard; and we want one! And even better, Ascari build the A10 in the UK, so theoretically, the A10 is a British supercar. Superb.

An epic list of cars there. The fastest car on the world today 10/01/2012 is the Shelby SuperCars (SSC) Tuatara which apparently is capable of 275mph. WOW
