In 2009 we had the double diffuser, 2010: the F-duct and last year the exhaust blown diffuser.

Each year the geniuses at work behind the scenes continue to push the boundaries of the regulations and exploit grey areas and loops holes and each year the rival teams question its legality whilst they scramble to copy the new system.

Last week Sir Frank Williams stepped down from the board of Williams F1, 35 years after founding the team in a disused carpet warehouse in Didcot, Oxfordshire.

He remains as team principle and will no doubt still be a huge presence in the pitlane but it is another step in what he calls the “gradual but inevitable process of handing over the reins”.

The first test of 2012 is over. The cars have been shaken down and the picture of 2012 is slowly developing.

At this very early stage it would be premature to determine the pecking order for the season ahead but it is possible to use comparable times to speculate who is up there and who still has some work to do. We can also look at some big stories that may develop over the season based on what we saw over the course of the four days.

The covers are being pulled back on the 2012 competitors and their unveiling has sparked mass debate about the aesthetics of this season’s grid.

Ferrari especially have been criticised by fans for their “ugly” car and Force India and Caterham have followed similar design philosophies.

Ferrari is arguably the biggest motoring brand on the planet and F1 is the pinnacle of motor sport. As a consequence of which the anticipation, speculation and expectation of their new car is always huge.

The Italian press are hot on the case of the Scuderia who haven’t won anything since 2008 and had a dismal season last year only winning one race.

2012 is upon us and the teams have franticly been developing their new machines to challenge for the title once again.

As is now common place in the sport the rules have been tweaked for the new season, not as majorly as prior to the 2009 season or for what we have in store for 2013 but never the less it is a new challenge for the teams and drivers alike.

2011 saw significant steps made with the aim of increasing overtaking in the sport and in turn making it more entertaining for the mass TV audience.

Drag Reduction System (DRS) made its debut to mixed reception, the gentleman’s agreement banning KERS in 2010 was lifted and Pirelli were charged with constructing a tyre with high degradation to introduce a new degree of excitement.

Red Bull has made the obvious hold on to their double world champion Vettel and with no obvious contender to replace Webber the Aussi keeps his seat.

Last week was the FIA awards Gala in Dubai all the leading lights in motorsport were in attendance for the glittering event but this week is the big one so don your tux, open the champagne and prepare yourself for my inaugural F1 awards blog 2011.

A race of true epic proportions, the rain soaked Circuit Gilles Villeneuve really threw up quite an event.

The F1 season has finished but the drama and intrigue certainly hasn’t. Last week it was announced that Ferrari, Red Bull and Sauber have left FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) after ongoing debates surrounding the RRA (Resource Restriction Agreement).

This leaves many question marks hanging over the sport concerning the spending of teams and the continued existence of the association.
