AUDI COUPE Quattro 2dr 4WD (1984)
Long lasting
We eventually sold our trusty old Audi Coupe as hubby was finding it a bit too low down for his hips nowadays. We bought a Mercedes Vaneo which is ok, but doesn't quite feel like it'll last forever in the way the Audi Coupe did (and continues to do according to the new owner, our nephew).
It's got little bits of rust happening here and there, and there might have been a tiny tiny oil leak happening under the car as there was a small pool in the garage if we didn't take it out for a few weeks.
I said about my hubby's hips but it is lovely and comfy otherwise, the chunky leather seats really do the trick. It might have been nice this summer to have air conditioning, and I suppose driving the Vaneo we were missing a few modern things. But you can't fault the Audi Coupe for reliability and just never dying.
In terms of petrol costs I don't think the Vaneo is that much better. I think we're getting around mid 30s in miles per gallon costs, which is a bit better than the Audi Coupe but not that much better.
We always felt very confident driving the Audi Coupe, the four wheel drive meant it always hugged the road nicely. We never drove it all that dangerously of course, but if you found yourself in a tight spot in the wet it always got you through it without losing its grip. I suppose its new owner might be testing that sort of thing a bit more! But he's still in one piece, so I suppose it's reliable when tested properly as well.
We did have an alarm and immobiliser fitted after there was a breakin about ten years ago now. On reflection we thought that the Audi Coupe was probably a bit too easy to break into. Still, it fared pretty well otherwise and kept us on the road happily.
