BMW 6 SERIES 630i Sport 2dr [272] (2007)

BMW 630i Sport - Slightly understated performance classic

It has a sleek look about it, I suppose shared by all BMWs (well, not all), but the 6 Series is set apart from the pack, for me at least. I've been trying for years to pin down what it is. I think from the outside it's the size ratio between the wheels and the body. The wheels just kind of look ever so slightly over-sized, not to the point of looking like a toy, but just enough to give a hint at its power. From the inside meanwhile, there is the usual BMW attention to detail, but nothing overstated, all in proportion and not at all garish. Even the legendary Sport button is neatly tucked behind the gear stick. That has actually been a problem on occasion when it's been hit accidentally by something either falling on it or someone trying to put something down there. The Sport button could have been more cleverly placed I would say.

Comfort wise I do have to admit that my ageing frame is starting to feel the effect of the low profile and the performance tyres. Another creature comfort for me is the clever display in the front helping with parking, showing me how close I am to things. That takes some self discipline to focus on the screen and not out of the window, but it's very effective.

I never thought I'd get used to something as high-tech as a voice activated telephone in the car, but I gave it a go one day whilst waiting for the wife in a car park (to call and see where she was) and it worked very well. I've been hooked ever since, often have useful meetings over the phone while on the road.

The fuel economy in the BMW 630i Sport is acceptable, I'd say I average around 30mpg, and I'm mostly on the motorways. Be warned though, if you feel like being adventurous and testing the car's abilities, you'll see a big drop. Understandable really, but it is dramatic, and your adventures will soon be cut short by a trip to a petrol forecourt.

Another plus is that the back seats are actually usable, not just token additions as in some sports cars. They're by no means big, and in all honesty I have only had the grandkids in there, but they seem like they would be ok for at least short journeys with adults. Behind those, the boot is a reasonable size, although a slightly odd shape, quite shallow and long, and also a little narrow. It's ok though, I've squeezed the golf clubs and trolley in there. I suppose BMW have in mind golf players!

I haven't had any mechanical failures to speak of yet. My 630i Sport is around three years old so I wouldn't expect anything just yet. FIngers crossed it'll live up to the BMW reputation for quality. I mentioned the fuel efficiency being reasonable, but of course insurance is very high, so that's something to factor in before purchase.
