Used car drivers advised to check tyres
23/09/2008
Drivers of new or used cars should ensure the tyres are not worn or damaged before hitting the roads this winter.
According to new research from ProTyre, 75 per cent of drivers who visited one of the group's outlets in the last year were found to have at least one tyre classed as defective.
This could risk the safety of both the driver and other road users, the company warned.
In addition, motorists who get behind the wheel of a car with defective tyres can be fined as much as £2,500 and be given three penalty points.
RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh commented on the ProTyre research and suggested that drivers were putting off a tyre check.
"This research is worrying. Clearly drivers are delaying the replacement of worn tyres which is a false economy and will place drivers at greater risk of having an accident," he said.
Tyres are one of numerous checks a motorist should undertake when buying a used car, as they can affect the acceleration, steering and braking.
