BMW patents new electric turbocharger
08/11/2011
BMW is always looking to push the boundaries for technology and economy, but this week we’ve heard news of a new patented electric turbocharger that should, in theory, cut out any turbo lag that its mechanical brother shares.
The new tech could make its debut in BMW’s next generation M-cars, and on diesel and petrol 5 and 3-Series models. Basically, the electric turbocharger spools itself up to working speed before the engine does – meaning you get instant boost! Genius!
Apparently, fuel economy is improved, and the aforementioned turbo lag is just a memory. This is good. Well played, BMW.
