BMW is the only company to introduce this technology, and they’re calling it Tri-Turbo. As you can probably guess, this new technology is basically three-turbochargers – which sounds bloody epic! And you’d be right in thinking so. The three turbos are connected to a diesel engine, which now produces 376bhp and a frankly ridiculous 516lb/ft of torque.
So, how does it work? Well, you have two standard exhaust-driven turbos, with another small electrically-powered turbo to effectively destroy any turbo lag. It’s a very clever system that will be seen in the 550dx.
Don’t be surprised if you try and take this thing on at the lights and you lose. This thing can go; with a 0-62mph time of 5.0 seconds, don’t even bother if you’ve got a hot hatch.
