In a shock Christmas-move, Renault has announced plans to cut several of its high-profile models and shut-down around 55 dealers. The culling has yet to be officially announced, but a Renault spokesman speaking to Autoblog said:
"We currently have too many dealers, and by reducing the number of outlets, the number of units sold will also reduce. We are looking to get down to around 135 dealers. Negotiations are on-going to decide where the closures will take place.”
According to Autoblog, the models that will be given the death penalty are the relatively new Wind Roadster, the entire Laguna range, Espace, Modus and every car from the Gordini range.
It’s a move that is not only surprising, but also probably a glimpse into the future, as the industry predicts a hard 2012, and this could well be Renault’s way of ensuring they don’t go under.
