DfT: People could save money if they used cars together

The benefits of car sharing have been discussed following the publication of a new report into the habits of UK drivers.

According to the Department for Transport (DfT), more than six in ten motorists had undertaken some sort of car sharing in the past month, such as giving a friend a lift or travelling in a group.

A quarter of these car sharers said the journey was business or work-related, while 28 per cent share a car at least once a week, the survey found.

The results could suggest a great deal of potential for more car pooling activities and proposals throughout the UK, as it can cut traffic and help drivers to reduce their environmental footprint.

"Car sharing helps reduce congestion, tackle pollution and carbon emissions and importantly, cut the costs of travelling," said transport minister Rosie Winterton.

"This research shows that informal car sharing is popular."

Other countries across the globe provide other benefits for car sharers or 'poolers' as they are also known. The US provides car pool lanes which are exclusively reserved for cars with multiple occupancy.
