I have always had a 4x4 because I live out in the sticks. So when I heard Audi were making one I jumped at the chance to buy it. And I was disappointed, I must say. There are a few reasons for this - I think really what Audi have created here is a 4x4 for posing in the city rather than rather than scrapping about in the mud. It shares a few characteristics with the traditional 'proper' 4x4 - plenty of room inside, big meaty exterior and a pretty throaty heavy-duty engine. But what you don't have in the Audi Allroad is any real capability to get to grips with real off-road terrain. It's not that Audi have even made a particularly bad 4x4 here. They certainly haven't made a bad car. It's just not as good as I'd hoped. It can cope with hills but anything craggy or particularly muddy and it falls down at the first post.
I was going to buy an Audi Avant Estate but then I saw the Allroad and - wow! I was blown away. Look at this thing! Have you ever seen a classier looking 4x4? Yeah it's big but it's not half as bulky and vulgar-looking as most 4x4s. Personally I think it's the best car ever! The engine in the Audi Allroad 2.5 TDi Quattro is powerful. It's quick and smooth and refined and surprisingly it has the feel of an engine in a sports car rather than an off-road vehicle. The ride is fantastic, there is a lot of road clearance and I feel like a king when I'm sat in the driver's seat! It's also very refined, and very quiet, it sounds like an electric care or something! OK I sound a bit weird now. The Allroad 2.5 TDi Quattro is not completely flawless, it was pretty pricey and quite obviously the fuel economy could be better. But overall I really can't complain about this car, it's changed my life!
