Used BMW X1 Overview

A history lesson…

It’s hard to distinguish what the key differences are between the X-range in BMW’s line-up. But with the X1, it is BMW’s attempt to bring 4x4 capabilities to the lower end of the SUV market. Effectively, this is a squashed X3, which in turn is a squashed X5. It’s a car that is going head-to-head with Ford’s excellent Kuga and the VW Tiguan.

It’s one of BMW’s newest models, and continues to sell well, despite being, well, pig-ugly. Whether we’ll have the X1 for the long-term is unclear, as the demand for big 4x4s continues to look quite sketchy, but one is for sure; BMW are definitely pushing for us to buy their X-range.

Bang for your buck

The X1 is the cheapest 4x4 it offers, and in many ways, it’s a good buy. If you want a high riding position and the chance to say you own a BMW, the X1 is an affordable way to get into the scene, but for most 4x4 purists, the X1 just won’t cut the mustard. For one, it’s a city 4x4. Its off-road capabilities are anything but impressive, and it would much rather stick to asphalt than hit the grass.

You can choose a front-wheel-drive X1 which is not only cheaper than its 4x4 alternative but much better on economy, too. It’s probably a better option, as you don’t really need off-road ability in such a basic SUV anyway. If you want to go off-road, buy a Range Rover.

Thankfully, BMW has done the business inside the X1, with the iDrive system and your usual BMW touches. It’s a nice place to sit, if a little boring and black.

What you’ll pay

As the X1 is still a new car, prices for used ones are still premium. You’d be looking at around £22,000 for a basic X1, while the top-of-the-range xDrive 23d M Sport would cost you over £30,000.

Whichever you go for, the X1 is the cheapest 4x4 BMW you can buy.

What to check

We’ve not heard any horror stories as yet, but that could be because the X1 is the baby of the range. Theoretically, if you are buying a used X1, mileage should be low and the condition of the car should be excellent. Walk away if it’s not, as there will be plenty out there.

Parts

Typical BMW prices apply here, but while the X1 is a new car, almost everything will be covered under warranty, so no need to worry here. Just make sure everything works when you do buy one, and if they don’t, check to see if BMW would replace them under warranty.

How it drives

This is where an X1 gets tricky. It’s not good enough off road to warrant being a 4x4, and while it is impressive on-the-road, it’s not quite as good as its bigger brother, the X3. So why would you buy one? Yes, it has a high-riding position, but really, there are a lot of cars that are much more capable on the road.

It’s a shame, because in some ways the X1 is a good car; it’s well-built, German and impressive in the bends for a bigger car, but it’s just not enough. It lacks soul, and a saloon BMW would be much more impressive for more of the time. If you want a small 4x4, save up and get an X3 or a Ford Kuga.
