For about 10 years after Citroen unveiled it, this was the best Turbo Diesel available anywhere. There was nothing to match it. I've driven plenty of cars, owned several, and this is first car I've ever loved. LOVED! What a great drive - the oomph of a big, powerful car in a streamlined package. Excellent road holding, and good cornering for a hatchback. The engine is so well built that it'll probably outlast any other part of the car - powering on for thousands of miles - easily well over 230 000. This car is very economical on fuel, and extremely reliable (provided of course that you're keeping it well maintained!) As it's a Turbo diesel you're sacrificing some smoothness and comfort for performance - the suspension is a little hard. But there's always the extra fun of being able to pull away at traffic lights in front of those boy racers, who barely noticed this car alongside them!
A great family car from across the channel, a good rival to the Ford Escort or something, the Citroen ZX was probably the first sensible thing to come out of France, really. It's no Carla Brunei to look at but it's respectable and reliable. It varies from other Citroen models, in a number of ways, all of which are good. For a start, you don't have to worry about it being over-complicated and obscurely sourced like most other Citroens as I reckon the ZX was designed for the international market. So the suspension is sturdy and simple and the car is generally well constructed and reliable. The handling and performance are pretty much average in my eyes. And by that I mean they're unproblematic and reasonable. And therefore nothing like any Citroen that came before. So it's well worth investing in one of these if you're looking for an incredibly cheap and reliable second-hand car.
