Daihatsu isn’t a respected brand in the UK, but it has been trying to allure us with its most recent cars in a way that could work. If you’re after a cheap car that will get you for A-to-B and you don’t really care about luxury, gadgets or build quality, then a Daihatsu could be the car for you. You are guaranteed to get amusement although it’s a little pricy to buy, but like all Daihatsu cars it is cheap to run. The Daihatsu Charade’s main selling point is that it retails for a dot under £6,000. Naturally it is very economic, and comes with good interior spec, but it seems a bit lightweight and the build quality is ‘thin. You do get ABS as standard, which is a bonus. Next up from Daihatsu cars is the Terios and we have to say we just don’t get the point of this. It’s a compactified 4x4 off-roader and it looks very cute, but it doesn’t drive very cute at all, either on or off the road. Combine this with instability on the motorway if there is anything windy nearby and the reasons to buy the Daihatsu Terios start to fade. The final example from Daihatsu cars is the Sirion. We like this one a lot. It's spacious and economical, and the driveability is rather good. If we had to come up with a criticism, it would be that the interior feels a bit unrefined, and there is not much pizzazz from the engine. We say that the Copen and the Sirion are the ones to take a look at – the rest are probably worth glossing over.

A real little beast, my Daishatsu Charade. Underneath the tiny exterior there's a real racing car just waiting to be unleashed. I've had some very surprised looks from people driving much beef...
