In a bygone era, Daimler cars transported Kings and Dictators around in a blur of superiority. Their history began 108 years ago but in recent years we have seen no offerings from Britain’s oldest marque - until now. Daimler cars make their return to the roads with the all-aluminium-bodied Super Eight. Daimler offers superlative levels of luxury and it is a brand that markets itself as just that. When a brand becomes rare their values usually increase – and that is definitely the case with Daimler. You’re probably more like to see a Rolls-Royce than you are a Daimler, and used car prices are currently sitting very high indeed. As they have been since they were bought by Jaguar in the Sixties, this Daimler is basically a big cat for uber-CEOs. To look at it from the outside there is little to suggest that this is not a mere long-wheelbase XJR. Once you sink into the cabin, you will see the picture a lot more clearly. For starters, there is walnut and leather absolutely everywhere. There’s a touchscreen SatNav/radio/aircon/entertainment console, with TVs in the headrests for the benefit of the rear passengers. There are folding trays in the rear seats with power points for laptop computers. You can even electrically adjust the position of the front passenger seat from the rear passenger seat – now that really is anticipating the needs of the clientele! Of course, you know that Daimler cars don’t come cheaply. In this case, you’ll need just shy of £80,000 for the standard model. But if you want a true luxury automobile and haven’t quite got the necessaries for a Phantom or Maybach, the Daimler Super Eight is quite a contender for your money.
