We were thinking about getting a Land Rover actually for the kids and things, but went for the Tucson for what looked like a slightly more reliable car (we'd had Hyundai before), and the miles per gallon seemed good. I'm not that sure we're quite getting what was advertised in terms of petrol usage, but it's not far off if it is lower. The bigger engine in this one (think it's the biggest one for this range) was still smaller than the Land Rovers we were looking at.
The best thing on the Tucson so far has been the space, masses and masses of space, and the reliability. We've had it now for 3 years from second hand and nothing at all has gone wrong, apart from one small thing once with the power steering. It's really nice and comfy inside for any length of trip, for us and the two kids, and being so high up makes it really easy to see all around past traffic and things. That also makes it easier to park. It's still not as easy as my old Micra! Very nearly as easy though I have to say. It's not too high up though. I remember my dad trying to get into a Land Rover we were looking at, and it was a bit much, but the Tucson is just fine for him. Mind you he hasn't been all that impressed with the lower back support on longer journeys, but we got him a special cushion so that's better now.
The Hyundai Tucson is very reliable too. During the heavy snow last winter it performed incredibly well. Even some other 4x4s had a bad time of it but we were still able to get round. Towing things (we've got quite a large caravan) has always been very simple, it never seems to run out of power for pulling along, as well as being able to go from standstill up a hill. Part of that is down to the auto gearbox, but still it does very well for itself.
The boot is really nice and big. We often get the kids bikes in there for days out. And with the back seats folded away it's a really massive space back there. We had a three seater sofa in there once with the boot only slightly open, and tied shut. it's ever so slightly high up for dogs to jump into though.
I love the way you can open up the rear windscreen! Why don't other cars do that?? It's really handy to be able to pop things in and out of the boot when you've already finished packing. There's lots of space to put things inside the car too, plenty of holders. I've also often wondered why other cars don't have a dipped dashboard like ours (so you can actually put things on it without them falling off).
