Agricultural cars never really work on the road. The Land Rover Defender, for example, is genius on the rough stuff, but you wouldn’t want to drive it on tarmac – that’s for sure! Isuzu, rather unfortunately, suffers from the same problems. If you want a steady workhorse for the country, then we would happily recommend one, just don’t go expecting to attract the opposite sex when you’re in town. There is only one offering from Isuzu we can guide you on, and that is the Isuzu Trooper. You can buy this car in 3 door or 5 door spec, and all variants come with a 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine. Diesel engines are probably what Isuzu is most famous for – in 2003 they shifted over 16 million of them so it’s safe to say that they have got that side of things running smoothly. You should be absolutely clear about the purpose of the Isuzu Trooper however. This 4x4 off-roader is very, very good when it is off-roading. Sadly when you put it on tarmac it all goes rather wrong with a twitchy, ever-so-slightly nervous ride. On top of this the interior spec is not what it should be, and the styling is a little dated so it is not a machine for posing in. This all adds up to a very clear picture – the only reason you possibly have for buying an Isuzu Trooper is if you want something that is perfectly at home in a field, possibly towing something. It’s perfect for farmers, but not much use for the rest of us.

I'm a proper off-roader so don't fear - I'm not one of those posers you see driving around Chelsea in a Land Rover (Range Rover Sport) sprayed with fake mud (yes they actually make fake mud t...
I have to say that when my husband bought this about ten years ago I was not that convinced. It seemed like a boy's toy or something, just kind of too big and muscly. But I have definitely com...
