The S-Type is a true Jag

The Jaguar S-Type has received some unwelcome flack in the last decade because some journalists don't think it's good looking enough, and I suppose I can agree to a point, as the S-Type isn't the best looking Jag ever made, but it's still an incredible car. First of all, it's all there; wood, leather, cows, trees - everything you'd expect of a Jag. It drives so smoothly you're convinced that it's fuelled by double cream. I just love how comfortable it is, and so will you! The 3.0-litre V6 Jaguar S-Type performs brilliantly. You'd be surprised how quick it is, and the 6-speed box that it's mated to is just the perfect match. With second hand values of the S-Type being very low, you can pick one up for around £5,000 which is a low amount for a lot of car!

It's a Jag, what more do you really need to know?

Well I bought my Jaguar S-Type as its third owner, it needed a bit of work, a leaking exhaust which cost a ludicrous amount to repair and the air conditioning wasn't very happy. It drives beautifully however, and, well it's a Jag isn't it? Yes, it's a Jag, I've always dreamed of owning one of these bad boys and now I do, and it's no disappointment. I do a lot of long journeys in it. I used to hate these slogs but now I love every second of them. It drives like you're floating on a cloud. The downside is the running costs, pathetic mpg and sky-high repair costs, hasn't been that reliable so far either but I'll give it a bit of a chance. At the end of the day, though, it's a Jaguar S-Type, so I'm really really proud to own it and I'm glad I bought it, even if it did put me in a lot of debt.

Good old Jag but starting to show its age, and thirsty too

One thing you really can't beat about the S-Type Jag is the feel of driving it over long distances. The comfort and support are just second to none. The front seats are so easy to adjust to the perfect position, and the rest of the controls, temperature and so on, are all marvellous. In the back it's not quite such a joy, it can be a little cramped in there, especially as the roof begins to taper down. For taller gents that can be a bother. It's a nice traditional sturdy look as well. It doesn't look old hat, it doesn't look silly and trendy, it just looks fantastic. There have been some mechanical issues. We've had quite a few things done to it now I come to think of it. The alternator and starter motor needed doing, and the radiator. A couple of years ago the differential started leaking a bit. The gearbox is feeling a bit sticky these days so that might go soon. Mind you, I've got about 100 thousand miles on it so these things will happen. It also feels very strong and just about as good as new still, so that's the plus side. I suppose since it's a Jag the parts are a bit more expensive than other cars. So, something to draw from that is not to expect to be paying simply for the car, but to expect a certain amount of ongoing costs to meet repairs and so on. Power wise it has plenty of surprises. It as, as you would expect, a refined experience around the urban environment, but once you're out into the country and let your foot slide down, it really lets its hair down. There is a lot of bang for one's buck in an S-Type. Sadly the boot leaves something to be desired, you might say. Not only is it quite compact height-wise, but also the wheel housings intrude into the shape of the boot quite significantly. I'm a keen angler and I can get my bits and pieces in there reasonably easily, along with my son's, but for more than two of us we do sometimes have things in the car with us, which can get a little stinky. What can I say though? It is an absolute pleasure to drive. I think I shall keep it for quite some time to come, although the petrol thirst is weighing on my mind, not really so much because of the cost but my kids will complain at me about the emissions and so on. I read here and there that newer performance cars are more eco 'friendly', so I may sniff around soon.

An old man's Jag

I owned the Jaguar S-Type from 1999 to 2006 and it never put a foot wrong. It may have the stigma of an old man's car but I didn't mind - because I am an old man! The interior is typical Jag; full of leather, wood and polished metals. It's a lovely place to be and makes the long journeys a real pleasure. It drives about as well as any big saloon I've ever been in. Sure, the suspension is soft, but that's what I want in a car, so I didn't mind. The 3.0-litre V6 was a joy to drive. Usable, relatively economical and powerful when needed, it delivered every single time. If you're after a S-Type but you're unsure, then I suggest driving one. You won't be disappointed!
