Now independent from Ford but still co-operating on new product, Mazda is a company in transition. In the past, it has sometimes struggled to impose a tangible personality of its own onto its vehicles but is looking to change that with the next generation of new products.

It's impossible to talk Mazda without first looking to its iconic car, the MX-5. Available as the classic soft-top roadster or with a clever lightweight folding hard top dubbed the ‘Roadster Coupe’, the MX-5 is still about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on and used examples of this third generation car are starting to represent decent value for money.

The much improved Mazda2 and Mazda3 models are still looking a little neglected by used buyers, so value can certainly be found here. Likewise, the Mazda6, after experiencing a few reliability issues with early diesel models, has come back strongly and nearly new cars look very smart buys. The CX-7 crossover is an interesting vehicle. Initially sold only with a thirsty petrol engine, it was almost impossible to recommend but the fitment of a 171bhp 2.2-litre common-rail diesel engine in 2009 now makes this smart-looking SUV decidedly purchasable. Prices start at around £17,500. Finally a tale of how the mighty are fallen. The Mazda RX-8 was once a massive sales hit, winning the What Car? 'Best Coupe' crown three years in a row. Fuel prices and emissions-based taxation have done for this pretty four-door coupe. Just try finding one that's sold for more than £3,500. If you can stomach the daily bills, it's still a real entertainer and a surprisingly practical one at that.
