Hi my names Aud and I own a Mazda MX-5. It's been in the family for a while now and I have always loved it. I just love how cute it is and how it's easy to park and really easy to look after. It doesn't cost to much for anything it needs. Tax is fine, insurance is reasonable and the running costs like petrol and new tyres are very respectable.
Inside, if you're over 5 foot 10, you're not going to fit. Thankfully, though, I'm 5 foot 3, so I fit just fine. It's basic but well-built and feels agile whenever you drive it.
Outside, the design hasn't changed much over the years, so it's typical MX-5, but I'd say it still looks just as good as the other cars in this sector and it definetely beats them when it comes to everything else!
It's a car probably for a woman; so girls, if you want one, I'd test drive one and make sure you don't have any kids haha!

There's nothing quite like having the roof down and winding your way through hill roads with the stereo on and the sun beaming down. That's what the Mazda MX-5 is good at and that's more or less all it's good at! That's not really fair, it's fine really for one or maybe two people commuting or taking a short trip, but mainly it's a car for good fun drives in the country. That joy turns to misery when it rains, you just don't feel all that protected from the elements, I mean obviously with the roof off but even with it up it's a bit exposed, and if it rains really badly then there can even be some leakage.
But it depends what you're looking for really. This isn't our only car, we've got another one for more practical purposes, and we (well, I) just wanted one for a good fun time. I also didn't want one that was going to have loads of mechanical problems all the time, and I'd always known Mazda to be reliable so I went for the MX-5. Mine is about 15 years old or so and really doesn't feel a day over five. I do most of the servicing myself, and generally keep it in good nick, but I'm not sure the last two owners were all that careful and it still seems to have come through just fine. It's needed the odd thing here and there, new roof, cam belt, something to do with the brakes that I let the garage do,
The Mazda MX-5 doesn't drink fuel, doesn't smell bad, and won't slide off the road as soon as a drop of rain falls (although it is quite light so make sure you get a feel for the limits before doing anything daring).
The roof is an absolute doddle to put up and down, that's another reason we went for this one over some other convertibles. The boot is also not ridiculously small. It's not big but it's not small, just a decent size, easily enough for the two of us to get our stuff in if we're going to visit friends.
The one warning I'd give is never to leave anything at all on show. Someone jacked in the lock on ours once just for the phone chargers that were hanging out! And the car didn't seem to put up much of a fight. The MX-5 isn't actually all that valuable itself these days though so I'm not too worried about someone nicking the car. Only other thing is there's some rust developing around the wheel arches and underneath, but really it's not that bad for a car of this age.
It's a great machine for weekend drives round the country, good fun for that. I got my Mazda MX-5 on recommendation from a friend who had one for a few years in the 90s. I'm not a massive petrolhead and I've got an eye on the costs, so I didn't bother with one of the bigger engine ones. The 1.6 packs plenty of punch as far as I'm concerned, must be the power to weight ratio, but it belts round corners and does well enough for itself in a straight line. I'm really no expert about cars and that's not why I bought it, I just wanted something for good fun times that wasn't going to need repairing every five minutes (I've heard that about a lot of sports cars). I got it second hand at 50k miles back in 2001, and I've only added about 20k to it since then, and it's not had much need doing to it. The previous owner had it in good nick and it's not had much go wrong, just a little problem with one of the motors in the electric window. There was another minor issue with the ignition mech that was picked up whilst it was in the garage for tyres (dunno how they worked picked up on it but they did) and that was easy enough. Other than those it's been fine, really sweet little motor to own.
It doesn't feel like a complicated car either, which I really go for. I can't be bothered with all these onboard computers and things in more modern beefy cars, I just wanna get in, put my foot down and zip off into the sunset, and the Mazda MX-5 is great for that. It also doesn't have loads of fancy things controlling the way the car feels inside so you get plenty of feel of what's underneath you. That might be a little bit uncomfy for some - passengers maybe! - but it's a pleasure to drive. Really though the suspension is good for a small car.
One problem in the Mazda MX5 is the noise. Roof open or closed, it's a noisy beast. Lots of wind noise. Generally there are some practicalities that it's lacking, like back seats! Visibility out the back isn't so great either, two big old blind spots with the roof up. It's not a silly car though, and it can handle itself in most conditions - although, being light, it can become a bit unpredictable in the wet, watch out for that. The fuel consumption again is quite a nice surprise, doesn't guzzle the stuff, and the boot is an alright size, enough for a couple of weekend suitcases. Not a hugely practical car, but practical enough, and makes up for it with fun and reliability.
Hi, my name's Bronson and I'm quite a big car. Odd then, to learn that I own a Mazda MX-5 - possibly the girliest car ever made. So, why the droptop Mazda, then? Well, it's a great two-seater that was very cheap and very cheerful.
In a flash, you can have the hood down and get the wind in your hair. It's a car that doesn't expect much from you - just your abilty to keep it on the road. It's a car that is light, nimble and agile. It's a car that keeps you smiling even when a relative has passed away.
I may look a bit daft in my MX-5 but I don't care. I'd recommend one to any men out there looking for a reliable, Japanese convertible which is easy to drive and returns good miles per gallon.
