Netcars Need To Know: With such a vast range, it's tough to know where to begin with contemporary used Mercedes models. One thing that has certainly changed for the better in recent years is Mercedes' commitment to quality. There was a period between 1998 and 2005 when the company was turning out some rather sub-par vehicles. You'll find rusty E-Classes of this vintage, pocket money M-Classes and very tired looking A-Classes. Since then, the company has tightened up on quality control and cars built within the last few years enhance rather than trade on the reputation of that coveted three-pointed star. So where's the value to be found? Often it's towards the periphery of the range, away from the mainstream models that everybody knows so well. So if you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary which represents strong value for money, why not take a look at the long wheelbase R-Class sports tourer or the massive but eminently likeable GL-Class 4x4? AMG models have improved a great deal in recent years from the rather unsubtle autobahn stormers they used to be and the latest C-Class AMG models are more than a match for BMW's M3. The estate model is especially appealing, although running a 6.2-litre engine may not be for everybody. If you have the requisite funds, the SLS supercar is looking strong value right now. Avoid the underwhelming early Viano, B-Class and CLC models.
