Lee Noble wanted to create a sports car that could rival Porsche’s – and he did. Whilst the company may now be without Noble’s presence or backing, the brand is still pursuing global domination with new investors. Speed and agility are the things that we think of when we think of Noble. Amazing handling and Lamborghini beating acceleration have kept Noble contenders in an market that eats you alive unless you have that USP. We have three types of Noble cars on review here, the Noble M12, the M14 and the M400. They are all very fast, and for the supercar-levels of performance on offer they are all comparatively cheap. Take the Noble M400, for example. This car goes from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and then zooms on to 190 mph. That compares well with practically anything else out there. Now here’s the clever part: the M400, like all Noble cars, is built nearly to completion in South Africa. Then a V6 Ford engine fitted with two turbochargers is neatly slotted in. Finally, the car is sold for a sniff under £60,000. In real terms that is expensive, but in supercar terms it is a bargain. You could spend £5,000 more and get a 3.8 Carrera S – but that particular Porsche would be humiliated in any race with the Noble you care to mention. If you want a Porsche certain to outperform the Noble M400 you could opt for the Carrera GT, but then you’d need to fork out hundreds of thousands more pounds to get hold of one. Noble cars have received a lot of good press in the UK – with Top Gear awarding the M12 the title of “Best British Car”. This is down to three things – the price and the performance we have mentioned, and the other deciding point is the handling governed by prodigious levels of grip.
