Netcars Need To Know: Porsche has spread its wings in recent years, away from its traditional stronghold of compact sports cars and roadsters and this has been hugely beneficial to the company's bottom line. The Cayenne SUV and the Panamera luxury saloon have sold well and are in strong demand on the used market. The second-generation Cayenne (from 2007-2010) addresses many of the styling controversies of the earlier car and improves efficiency, especially in diesel guise. The Boxster and Cayman are both excellent choices. Early 986-generation Boxsters are now very cheap, but look out for cracked bore liners on pre-2001 cars. The later 987-generation Boxsters are easily identifiable by the tall rather than the round air intake on the flanks and are more reliable. The Cayman is a cracker with superb handling balance and very good efficiency for such a rapid car, especially if you can find a later one with the direct injection engine. The car that defines Porsche remains the 911. The air-cooled cars are now starting to enter the realms of collector specials, and the massive selling 996-generation car, introduced in 1998, looks appealing, with prices kicking off at less than £10k for Carreras. Early cars were prone to intermediate shaft failure, which can mean a new engine, which is why so many buyers remain a little shy. The Mezger-engined models (Turbo, GT2, and GT3) featured a different engine design and are a more bulletproof proposition, as are the 997-generation cars. The biggest bargain in the range looks to be the mighty 420bhp all-wheel drive 996 Turbo, good quality examples of which can be found for around £25,000.
