Netcars Need To Know:

Chopping a third of its dealers, half of its model range and revising its 2012 forecasts down wasn't the Christmas present Renault expected to be delivering in December 2012 but it played the Bad Santa role to perfection. True, there was a lot of dead wood in the Renault range that new car buyers were rightly avoiding. Is there a silver lining in this cloud for used car purchasers?

Although eyebrows were raised at the pensioning off of the rather lovely Espace, a car that had become just too expensive to compete, used buyers can score on low mileage two year old examples retailing at less than half its new price. Paying £12,500 for a Grand Espace doesn't seem unreasonable. The Clio and Mégane models are both some of the strongest cars in their respective sectors, so demand remains high. There's value to be found in the Twingo line up and Modus and Grand Modus models look undervalued. The Kangoo Trekka makes a great, cheap, all-weather hack. Those looking for a cheap SUV could certainly do worse than the Nissan X-TRAIL-based Renault Koleos.

This generation Laguna has never got close to the success of its handsome predecessor, of which you'll find top-spec 2007 run-out models that still look great and will set you back a mere £4,500. The rarely seen Laguna Coupe is another model that has done more than 50 per cent of its new value in two years. Although a 2.0 dCi coupe might look tempting at £9,495, this car still has quite a bit of depreciating to do. An Audi TT might be a safer home for your money.

Not as good as Clios of old

I used to have one of the very first Clios and the thing I loved was that it was genuinely small. This may sound strange but this generation of Clio is actually quite ‘big’, parking can someti...

Renault Megane 1.6 VVT Privilege 5DR (2002)
The running costs are amazing

I had a big Scenic before this so the Megane didn’t have much to live up to on the performance front. Shockingly, I think the Scenic was actually a better drive. There just seems to be very li...

Renault Megane Scenic 2.0 RXE 5DR (1997)
Invincible! A great car if you can get passed the dated looks!

We owned one of these until very recently and it just kept on going so reliability gets five stars! We recently changed to a newer Megane because we found we didn’t need the space anymore. ...
