A history lesson… Skoda, like SEAT, has become an unbelievably popular car manufacturer. Once probably the most embarrassing car company in Europe, Skoda really has turned itself around and become easily the most improved manufacturer of the 21st century. The Fabia has helped the company a lot, thanks mainly to its popularity and good-looks. The latest Fabia has been with us since 2007 and it’s been a revelation. The ads featuring a Fabia being made out of cake and then the one with the vRS model have really helped build a reputation for the hatchback, and now they sell in their thousands. With Skoda’s new image and VW at the helm, Skoda and the Fabia can only go onwards and upwards. Bang for your buck Any car company under the VAG umbrella is going to be on the pricey side when it comes to RRP, but the Fabia is worth every penny. You get absolutely everything you could think of in a hatch: airbags, ESP, TC, air-con, auto-climate control, EBD and impressive build quality. The vRS model is the one for the spirited drivers out there. That particular models features VW’s tried and tested 1.6-litre engine that is not only powerful but relatively impressive with economy, too. What you’ll pay Diesels start at £6,600 for a 70bhp 1.4TDI and a 105bhp 1.9-litre Fabia 3 will be around £8,200. If you want a large estate, expect to pay nearly a £1,000 more for the privilege. What to check There’s nothing to check really on a Skoda Fabia. The VW build quality is just too superlative to put into words, so just make sure you check all the basics like alloy wheel, interior and exterior conditions and you should be fine. Parts Parts are quite expensive due to VW’s influence. An alternator is particularly expensive at around £400, while a clutch assembly is £200. Front brake pads are less expensive at £40 a pair, which is quite reasonable, to be honest. How it drives We wouldn’t say the Fabia is the best driving hatchback on the road, but what it does offer is a level of comfort and luxury that few can match. The Ford Focus has the handling department on lock, but the Focus can’t match the Fabia for feel and quality. The way the Fabia rides over bumps is super impressive, and it should keep the kids nice and safe with a bunch of airbags and electronic devices designed to keep everyone inside safe. There’s plenty of room inside, it’s not so big that you’re going to struggle to park it and with an airy feel, you’ll be assured of feeling refreshed after a long journey. If you want some fun, the only car in the range to buy is the powerful vRS variant – preferably in green. Overall, the Fabia isn’t the most exciting motor ever made, but it’s very well put together, safe, economical and quite cute. We’d say great alternative to the Fiesta or Golf.
I bought this car from new and it beat the competition hands down on price. No other manufacturer could offer a 5 door for this price. The only compromise I made was petrol instead of diesel...
I've had the Fabia 1.2 TSi for three years now, having bought it at a year old with about 20k on the clock, and I can honestly say it hasn't caused me any unusual trouble. I've had a couple of...
The Skoda Fabia is a bit like the Skoda Ocatvia gone wrong. I was really looking forward to this and despite my reservations at the test drive I bought it anyway but I do regret it. I know tha...
