Smart's range once flared like a supernova before contracting back to dwarf status. For a while it looked as if this brand was really going to make a significant impact on the small car market but the balance sheet told a different story, the company losing almost four billion euros between 2003 and 2006. Somewhat chastened, paymasters DaimlerChrysler cut plans for further range expansion and knocked all of the peripheral models on the head, concentrating purely on the fortwo models. Now a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Smart is in far better financial shape.

What was DaimerChrysler's loss can be to the used buyer's gain. The Smart forfour is a cheeky four-door supermini that still looks fresh and funky. You'll be able to pick these up for around £3,000 on an 04 plate, although the rather unhinged Brabus turbo model starts at just over £5,000 and offers laughs aplenty. The fortwo is available in myriad guises and editions and £6,500 for a 2010 Passion CDI diesel doesn't seem at all exorbitant.
