Subaru Outback 2.0D - Flawless?

The Subaru Outback 2.0D - three words: really nice car. It's technically stunning, absolutely gorgeous and a thrill to drive. I bought one a few weeks ago so it might still be the honeymoon period but I reckon it's the best car I've ever owned. Subaru whipped up a new diesel engine for the Outback and it's a real beast. It produces 150bhp from just 1,800rpm. In short, it's very efficient. It can do 0-60 in about 9 seconds (not that I've been able to test this... yet) and the mpg it manages is about 50. It's roomy inside and out and it's 4x4 (of course) so it makes for a really smooth ride. Can't find anything bad to say about the Subaru outback yet. Maybe there's not a lot of grip at the front but I'm grasping at straws here. And because the engine is so 'green' (despite the car being a 4x4 and really quite big) it's even cheap to tax. Buy one.

Subaru Outback 2.5 S Outback 5dr (2005)
Subaru Outback 2.5 S - It should be great but...

I've done over 40,000 miles in the car and it's now on 98,000 and three is much that is excellent. I bought it to tow racing cars which it does superbly and the fuel economy is tolerable (34mpg) on normal running around with a light foot. BUT The check engine light came on and despite an expensive replacement sensor we've not found a solution even with the help of a non franchised specialist. It goes fine, passes MOTs and has good fuel economy but the light keeps coming back. It's now developed a grumble that sounds like transmission although I've not had chance to check as yet.. Parts are dear and like most modern cars if the ecu does not like something it''s beyond the resources of most diy ers. A pity because it's a great car to drive and from new to 80,000 miles was probably a joy.
