Built in Blackpool, TVR became a household British name that connoted images of death, speed and excitement. Despite going bust a few years ago, people are still lusting after the canoe smelling sports cars that once flew out of the workshop. TVR cars are not one of your exotic, delicate breeds. TVR's are fast and raucous. They often have names that evoke frightening things – mythical beasts, dangerous weapons, mothers-in-law. TVR cars are designed to make your cheeks ripple, and they don’t particularly mind whether that is due to speed or fear. After all, they don’t come with airbags, anti-lock brakes or traction control. If you are a decent driver you shouldn’t need them, runs the official line from TVR, which is certainly one point of view. TVR build all their own engines nowadays and they certainly don’t make them for pottering around. Even base level TVR cars will get you to 60 in 4.5 seconds. The new TVR Sagaris manages in nearer to 3.5, hits 100 in well under 9 seconds, and keeps going to just shy of 200 mph. For all this oomph, the entry price to the TVR cars range is around £36,500 and the TVR Sagaris is a ‘mere’ £49,500. The handling on the Sagaris has been tweaked as well to deliver a lot more feedback, where in former models you would have no idea that you were on the brink of a catastrophic loss of grip. Aggressive body styling and exhausts that poke out of the rump at 90 degrees to the direction of travel combine to make this a machine which, if it were human, you would be careful not to make direct eye contact with.

I love British cars and TVRs in particular, so I had to buy the Sagaris. I'm still paying for it now, both literally and through the complaints of my wife. But it's one of the fastest cars on ...
