There’s pretty much nothing to check on a Golf. Apart from the basic checks that you’d look at with any car, no horror stories have been reported, so you should be ensured of quality motoring well into the decade.

Parts

VW parts are notoriously expensive due to their ‘quality’ benchmark, but it’s one of the few downsides to owning a VW. Clutch assembly will be around £75 and an alternator will be about £115. Brake pads front and rear are about £55.

How it drives

If you opt for the thirsty but exciting 200bhp GTI, you’re in for a love affair that could well take over from your human partner. The GTI is one of the most legendary badges on the rod and the latest version from VW is probably the best ever.
