A history lesson… What can you say about the Volkswagen Golf that hasn’t already been said? It’s been with us for decades, continues to dominate sales charts and is probably the most respected hatchback on the market. Now in its 7 millionth incarnation, the Golf is as good now as it’s ever been, and it’s all thanks to VW’s commitment to build the Golf as a quality product. This is a car that’s made for the driver who wants luxury, build-quality and engineering excellence. Jump from a Golf into any other hatch and you’ll immediately feel like you’ve downgraded; it’s just that special! The GTI has helped cement its legacy as a superb platform for a hot-hatch, as that car is one of the most brilliant and superlative cars in the world, combining 200bhp with a quality that is matched by no other. Bang for your buck The only real downfall to a Golf is the money aspect. For all the aforementioned quality, VW expect you to pay. And pay handsomely. Even the most basic Golf is an expensive car to buy, but at the end of the day, if all you want is something that will last forever and still feel like the real deal, then the Golf will do that in its sleep. Plus, VW do give you quite a bit of clever tech, too. Higher spec models come with sat-nav and a lovely touch-screen multimedia device. And with such an array of variations, the Golf is the perfect car for anyone. What you’ll pay Prices for the latest model will cost you from £6k onwards. The more popular and super-quick 200bhp GTI is sitting at around £13k, and will probably remain at that price for a few years to come. What to check There’s pretty much nothing to check on a Golf. Apart from the basic checks that you’d look at with any car, no horror stories have been reported, so you should be ensured of quality motoring well into the decade. Parts VW parts are notoriously expensive due to their ‘quality’ benchmark, but it’s one of the few downsides to owning a VW. Clutch assembly will be around £75 and an alternator will be about £115. Brake pads front and rear are about £55. How it drives If you opt for the thirsty but exciting 200bhp GTI, you’re in for a love affair that could well take over from your human partner. The GTI is one of the most legendary badges on the rod and the latest version from VW is probably the best ever. It combines amazing quality, capable handling, usable power and graceful looks to create an absolutely perfect hot-hatch for the modern era. Going down the range, one of the picks of the bunch is the Bluemotion. This is VW’s attempt at an ‘eco’ Golf, and it’s brilliant. It looks just the same as any other Golf and yet manages well over 60mpg on the combined cycle. The 1.6-litre diesel engine has been engineered to sip as little fuel as possible, meaning you will visit the petrol-station a lot less. Whichever Golf you go for, you’re guaranteed of a brilliant car that will last for years, impress the neighbours and keep you and your family safe.
It was this or a Scirocco and I decided the extra over the Scirocco would be worth it and I think I was pretty much right. It's such a refined ride, no matter what you do with it, or at wha...
Very reliable. Great all rounder for everyone.
Almost 2 months ago my wife and I decided to trade in our Citroen C3 and get a proper car. I'd pretty much set my heart on a Golf and my wife a mini but we needed to try some other cars Af...
