A history lesson… Volkswagen’s most super, supermini has been with us for a good while now, and we’re pleased to say that the latest Polo is just as loveable now as it’s ever been. Sure, it’s as basic as basic can be, but it’s just so cute, easy to drive and is probably the most affordable VW to buy; there’s nothing to dislike. The pick of the range would be the Bluemotion, which not only changed the mainstream market’s ideology with economical cars, but was a damn fine example of one, too. It was super-efficient, very good on fuel and, above all, it looked like a normal Polo. As an alternative to the MINI, Fiat 500 or every other supermini, the Polo is an expensive option, but it’s one of the best and most fuss-free cars in the sector. Bang for your buck You don’t get too much bang for your buck with a VW Polo. It’s a shame, because the Polo is a fantastic car, it’s just too damn expensive when you consider what you actually get. The problem is you don’t actually get that much. Sure, you get a steering wheel, a heater and electric windows, but that’s pretty much it unless you opt for the top-of-the-range model. The Bluemotion is easily the best car in the range, because it’s just lovely. It’ll save you a huge amount of money, keep you safe, carry your shopping and do it whilst helping the world with the climate-change dilemma. What you’ll pay A new Polo is very dear indeed considering it’s a small supermini. Prices are around £14/15k for a new one, and as a result, used car prices are pretty steep, too. If you want a premium feel, the Polo is probably the only supermini you can go for, and expect to pay around £5/6k for a used Bluemotion. What to check There’s very little kit on a Polo so you shouldn’t need to worry about anything. They are typically driven by families, so should have been well looked after. Parts A new alternator will set you back almost £245, while an ECU engine management unit is around £550 – ouch. Other parts are considerably more respectable, but VW never make parts’ prices as cheap as its rivals. How it drives Driving a VW Polo is a real joy. You get that happy feeling that only several cars can provide you with. It’s an odd thing to describe, but that build quality and solidity really does allow you to just drive the car in a respectable and enjoyable manner; even if you’re not driving all that quickly. The steering wheel is beautiful; weighted, precise and has a lovely feel to it. The boot space is laughable, as is rear leg-room, but it is a supermini and it doesn’t apologise for what it is. The little Bluemotion model will wind you up every now and again with its low horsepower output, but for the most part it’s just a fantastic, money-saving tool that will rarely let you down. Not exciting, but far from mundane.
Ideal car for small family as lots of space in back seats and boot. Economical and easy to drive with good handling
We had a VW Polo from new, for three years, and got rid of it sharpish as we were worried about problems after the warranty ran out. It was a decent enough car to drive when it was out of t...
My dad had a Volkswagen Polo when I was a girl, so it's a bit sentimental for me. I didn't let that guide me too much, and in the end it was the fuel economy that won me over. I'm easily getti...
